Potential Health Benefits of Blueberries
Blueberries are full of healthy antioxidants
Research conducted by Massey University’s Dr. Janyawat Vuthijumnon has found potential health benefits of blueberries.
Polyphenols, which are natural chemical compounds that protect plans from insects, mushrooms, diseases amongst many other helpful features, are found in blueberries. Blueberries contain anthocyanins which are natural pigments that are responsible for giving blueberries their blue, purple, violet and red colours. High antioxidant concentration is present in blueberries as measured by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay.
An antioxidant is a substance that reduces damage by oxygen. Antioxidants are present in vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A. Antioxidants are good for our health as it slows down age-related macular degeneration progression.
Gain the benefits of natural vitamins through blueberries
The American institute for cancer research charity found the following:
While vitamins, that are found in blueberries, do not provide energy like carbohydrates, fats and proteins do, they are responsible for boosting immunity, help strengthen bones, heal wounds and assist with obtaining energy from food along with many other functions.
Quercetin, a type of polyphenol found in blueberries, has been found to have antioxidant activity and manganese, which has a range of biological activities such as reducing inflammation.
Blueberries are also and excellent source of vitamin K, which is responsible for blood coagulation (clotting). This is particularly useful for preventing excessive bleeding. Dietary fibre found in blueberries have the potential to reduce exposure to cancer-causing substances on cells, and friendly gut bacteria which helps protect colon cells by the short-chain fatty acids that it produces.
Daily blueberry consumption is a great way to get vitamins and minerals. If the body does not sufficient vitamins, you may start to feel lethargic, be more prone to infection and could develop other serious complications.
Ellagitannins that are found in the polyphenols get converted into ellagic acid and then into urolithins. Once the blueberry is digested and these compounds are extracted, the compounds help project DNA from free radical damage. The accumulation of such damage may cause cells to die which could lead to diseases and is often the starting point of cancers. Pterostilbene in blueberries have been found to cause abnormal cells to self-destruct in the body, particularly in the pancreas, mouth, stomach and lung tissue.
Anthocyanins found in blueberries are good for our health
Dr. Natasha Birt, Massey University PHD graduate has found the following in her research:
Blueberries are well known for their beneficial compounds, and are often referred to as a ‘super food’ or ‘functional food’ because of their important role in health. The anthocyanins found in blueberries have been a popular area of research for quite some time. Researchers have investigated blueberries for their use in prevention and/or treatment of various diseases such as Alzheimer’s diseases and urinary tract infections. This scientific research has been conducted both in vitro (in a test tube) and vivo (in the body).
Testimonials
Our customer who has gone off dialysis by taking Mamaku Blue Pure, 100% Blueberry Juice:
It was in early July 2014 that my wife was admitted to hospital with kidney failure. At 85 years of age she was already a diabetic on 32 units of injected insulin daily and had had a pacemaker inserted in 2013 and also had severe osteoarthritis affecting the whole of her spinal column… I learned from the internet about favourable responses attributed to the use of blueberry juice in renal failure, especially on your site at Mamaku Blue.
After consulting with her dietitian and her physician, I started her on Mamaku Blue in September… She has recently amazed us all when her renal function began to show definite signs of improvement and the renal physician began to reduce her dialysis from 3 sessions to 2 sessions per week. Then, to our final amazement he announced that she had improved to such an extent that she could come off dialysis altogether. She has been without dialysis now since early March 2015 (the past 9 weeks) and, what’s more, she no longer requires her daily dose of insulin! – Geoffrey S*
